Immediately after that BSOD I ran it in safe mode which works similar where music works but not videos, but instead of a BSOD for the video the server execution failed shows up.

Most external media players support common formats like mpeg and avi. Nothing seemed to fix it- it's not just a Windows media player issue, it's a format issue with the file types, encoding, or who knows. I found that videos rendered with flash don't have that issue, but in our case at the time, there were no media players that supported it in a cost-effective manner.
