Virus sent email to contacts

Those are spam emails where a spammer has hijacked an email address and makes it look like the sender is the "hijacked email address". Generally, if your email account was "hacked" and emails were being sent from your account, those should appear in your sent items folder but failing that, looking at the email header info on a message rec'd by someone, would show if the message s are coming from your account. A "hijacked" email address wouldn't have the spam messages in your sent items folder - there's a big difference between a hijacked email address and a hacked email account. This is a wonderful article that basically says there is nothing you can do to protect your email account from being compromised other than not use easy to guess passwords. This is not at all true. I have email accounts with several providers and only those hosted by mail. My wife also uses multiple email accounts and a different personal computer — Only her account with mail.

Further imagine that this clever virus is happy to restrict its attack to only one of the 12 different email providers that it finds on your personal computer. It seems to me your best bet is to move to a different email provider. AND gmail service is free and offers much more capabilities than almost any other email provider — still for free.
